Dry eye can be caused by a number of factors. Dry eyes can result from decreased tear production or an unstable tear film.
Causes of Dry Eye:
- Contact lenses
- Age: As we age, glands in the eyelids produce less oil. Decreased oil production makes tears to evaporate quickly, leaving the eye dry.
- Diseases including Diabetes, Arthritis and Collagen Vascular Diseases, and Blepharitis
- Hormonal changes, especially after menopause
- Prescription medications as well as over the counter medications: these include few high blood pressure medications, diuretics, antihistamines, anti-anxiety medications, sedatives and pain medications.
Symptoms of Dry Eye
- Foreign body sensation inside the eye
- Blurring of vision after periods of reading, computer work, or watching TV
- Itching, burning, or aching of eyes
- Reflex tearing or excessive tearing
- Red or irritated eyes
